Jim Jordan Asks DOJ to Investigate Former Special Counsel Jack Smith for Perjury

Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, on July 22, 2026 asked the Justice Department to investigate whether former special counsel Jack Smith perjured himself when testifying about his inquiry into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election, The New York Times reported.

Smith led the federal prosecutions of Trump that were wound down before Trump returned to office. A congressional referral asking the department to scrutinize the prosecutor who investigated the president raises concerns about the use of federal law-enforcement power against former officials, though a referral is a request and does not itself open an investigation.

The Justice Department had not announced any action in response as of the reporting.
