Iran War Claims First U.S. Troop Deaths as Strikes Widen

U.S. Central Command said Saturday, July 18, 2026 that two U.S. service members were killed in action and one is missing after Iranian ballistic-missile and drone attacks Friday on partner forces near Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base; four other troops were medically evacuated and have since been discharged. These were the first American military fatalities from Iranian fire since March. In response, and at President Trump's direction, U.S. forces carried out a further round of strikes Friday night against underground weapons-storage and surveillance sites in Iran, capping a seven-night bombing campaign. Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamene warned the U.S. would face "unforgettable lessons" if strikes continued. CENTCOM said 16 U.S. service members have now been killed and more than 430 wounded since the war with Iran began.

The deaths mark a significant escalation of a conflict that has widened steadily since fighting resumed earlier this year, drawing in Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iraq's Kurdistan region and raising the stakes of an open-ended U.S. military commitment in the region.

As of July 19, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. has reinstated a naval blockade of Iranian ports; strikes and counter-strikes continued through the weekend, including reported Iranian attacks intercepted by Bahraini and Kuwaiti air defenses.
