ICE Sweeps Southwest Kansas Meatpacking Towns, Detaining Dozens and Emptying Classrooms

ICE began a multi-day enforcement operation on September 23, 2026, across Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal, Kansas, targeting workers at National Beef and Cargill meat processing plants, KCUR reported. Liberal Vice Mayor Janeth Vazquez said "dozens" were detained, though ICE did not give local officials an exact count. Agents conducted traffic stops based on appearance and searched vehicles without clearly explaining their warrants; resident Frank Duran said agents stopped him and his U.S.-born daughter and "profiled" them.

The operation emptied workplaces and schools: 120 students were absent from one Dodge City elementary school the day after agents arrived, and several businesses closed for the week as fear kept residents home. Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas arranged free legal consultations for affected families.

ICE has not released arrest totals or identified the legal basis for the stops residents described. No legal challenge to the operation had been filed as of the KCUR report.
