ICE Launches Unannounced 45-Day Immigration Enforcement Surge Across California

ICE reportedly launched an unannounced, roughly 45-day enforcement surge across California beginning in San Diego in early October 2026, according to the Washington Examiner, local news outlets and the California Immigrant Policy Center. Arrests have since been reported in the Central Valley, Central Coast and San Diego, including dozens in Fresno and Madera counties since Oct. 1, mostly at traffic stops. Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the operation's name or scope when asked for comment.

Advocacy groups say agents have been directed to arrest anyone believed to lack legal status, rather than targeting people with criminal records, and have documented cases including a Fresno father detained during his commute and a college student's father detained in a campus parking lot. The California Immigrant Policy Center called the timing, weeks before the Nov. 3 election, an attempt to intimidate immigrant communities.

No federal lawsuit specifically challenging the operation had been reported as of this writing; community groups have organized rapid-response and know-your-rights efforts in response.
