ICE Agent Shoots Man in Front of 5-Year-Old Son in Manhattan, Firing Seven Rounds
An ICE agent shot Oscar Belgal, 28, in the neck during an attempted arrest in Manhattan's Marble Hill neighborhood on Oct. 8, firing seven rounds while Belgal's 5-year-old son sat in the back seat. NYPD said Belgal was conscious and handcuffed at the scene; his lawyer said a bullet remains in his body. The boy was uninjured.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said agents feared for their lives, alleging Belgal rammed two other cars; NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Belgal was pulling into a parking space when plainclothes agents approached with a drawn gun before he began pulling the car forward. Belgal's attorney said shooting a father with his son in the car was not lawful regardless of his record. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting "unconscionable" and said ICE "must be abolished"; Gov. Kathy Hochul called for a statewide pause in ICE operations.
A federal judge barred Belgal's deportation the next day, and he was moved to federal detention in Brooklyn. DHS said the shooting remains under investigation.
