ICE Agent Shoots and Kills Renée Good, a U.S. Citizen, During a Minneapolis Traffic Stop

On January 7, 2026, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officer Jonathan Ross fatally shot Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, writer and mother of three, during an immigration operation on Portland Avenue South in Minneapolis. Good's SUV was stopped in the street; when agents ordered her out, she reversed briefly and then drove forward and to the right. Ross fired three shots as the vehicle passed, striking her in the chest, forearm and head. She died at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Ross acted in self-defense after being struck by the vehicle. Video reviewed by news organizations showed Ross upright and moving away from the SUV as he fired. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said publicly that he had watched the footage and rejected the official account. The gap between the agency's narrative and the recorded evidence became the central fact of the case.

The killing set off sustained protests and triggered a cascade of January events, including a Justice Department decision not to open a civil rights investigation and articles of impeachment against Noem.
