ICE Agent Charged With Felony Assault After Allegedly Attacking 72-Year-Old Fresno Homeowner

Fresno prosecutors filed three felonies -- assault likely to produce great bodily injury, elder abuse and vandalism -- plus a misdemeanor battery charge against ICE agent David Gonzalez, 32, after an Oct. 10 incident at a Fresno home. Police say Gonzalez, a former Hidalgo County, Texas sheriff's deputy who joined ICE in December 2025, was found asleep in the yard and appeared intoxicated when the homeowner, 72, confronted him; investigators allege Gonzalez then assaulted the man, slamming him into a parked car, and attacked the man's daughter when she intervened. The homeowner shot Gonzalez during the confrontation.

Gonzalez pleaded not guilty at his Oct. 14 arraignment, appearing in a wheelchair; bond was set at $37,000 and he must remain in California if released. The incident does not appear to be connected to any immigration-enforcement duty. ICE referred inquiries to DHS, which had not responded as of the following evening.

The case is scheduled to continue in Fresno County court next week. No trial date has been set.
