Hegseth Mocks NATO Allies' Afghanistan Role, Draws Rebuke From UK and Poland

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told ROTC cadets and recruits at the University of Tennessee on October 17, 2026, that only one or two NATO-led coalition allies were actively fighting in Afghanistan by the war's end, joking that troops translated the ISAF patch as I saw Americans fighting. Hegseth, who served as an Army captain in Afghanistan, said only around five of the roughly 50 flags at coalition headquarters in Kabul represented countries that had actually contributed to combat.

The remarks drew swift criticism from allied officials and veterans: a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Hegseth was wrong to diminish international forces' role, noting 457 UK personnel died in the war; Poland's foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, cited 44 Polish dead; and retired U.S. General Ben Hodges called the comments shameful. More than 1,100 non-U.S. NATO and partner troops died over the 20-year war.

Neither the White House nor the Pentagon had publicly responded to the allied criticism as of this report.
