Pentagon Opens Investigation Into Senator Mark Kelly

In late November 2025, the Defense Department announced it was investigating Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a retired Navy captain and former astronaut, over a video he and other Democratic lawmakers recorded urging members of the military and intelligence community not to comply with illegal orders. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the video "despicable, reckless, and false" and pursued the inquiry publicly on social media.

Kelly, a frequent critic of the administration's defense and immigration policies, said the investigation was an attempt to intimidate him and other members of Congress from performing oversight duties, and vowed not to be silenced. The dispute escalated further in subsequent months, with Hegseth threatening Kelly's military rank and retirement pay and later calling for a second investigation.

Critics, including national security analysts, said using Pentagon investigative authority against a sitting senator over political speech raised serious concerns about the politicization of military institutions and retaliation against a legislative critic.
