Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for U.S. Users Two Days After Trump's Order

Google said in a blog post Saturday that Google Maps would begin showing Lake Ontario as "Lake America" for users in the United States, following Trump's Thursday executive order directing the Interior Department to rename the lake. Google said the change rests on its long-standing practice of using names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System: users in the United States see "Lake America," users in Canada continue to see "Lake Ontario," and users elsewhere see both. It repeated what the company did in 2025 after the order renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

The episode shows how quickly a domestic naming decision propagates into the reference layer most people actually use, giving an executive order reach beyond federal databases without any further government action.

The order came amid an escalating trade dispute in which the United States and Canada have imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other's goods. Ontario Premier Doug Ford answered on Saturday with a billboard-sized sign on the Canadian shore reading "Lake Ontario. Now and forever." The White House, Prime Minister Mark Carney's office and Ford's office did not comment on Google's decision Sunday.
