What happened

Trump purported to discharge Perlmutter and named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acting Librarian. A district judge declined to block the removal; the D.C. Circuit reversed 2-1 and enjoined it, holding "the Librarian of Congress — not the President — is authorized by the statute to appoint the Register." The Supreme Court declined the administration's request on 2026-06-30.
