What happened

Judge Alsup ordered five departments to reinstate immediately, finding agencies had followed an OPM directive using a poor-performance pretext he called a "gimmick"; Judge Bredar ordered reinstatement across 18 agencies. The Supreme Court stayed Alsup's order on 2025-04-08 on standing grounds, and the Fourth Circuit stayed Bredar's. The agencies disclosed a combined 25,000 terminations.
