DOGE Quietly Disbanded, Ending Musk's Cost-Cutting Experiment Early

In late November 2025, the Trump administration disbanded the Department of Government Efficiency, the cost-cutting initiative Elon Musk had led earlier in the term, roughly eight months before its charter was set to expire. Created by executive order in January 2025 with a mandate to run nearly two years, DOGE had promised to identify $1 trillion or more in federal savings. Its own website claimed about $214 billion in savings, a figure multiple outside reviews found to be inflated, mislabeled or otherwise unverifiable.

Musk departed DOGE in May 2025 following a public falling-out with Trump, and several remaining staffers were absorbed into other federal agencies or left government service entirely. The unit's closure came with little formal explanation from the White House.

Beyond its financial shortfall, DOGE's cuts were linked to significant downstream harm, including the dismantling of USAID, which critics and humanitarian groups tied to deaths from disrupted foreign aid programs. The quiet ending stood in sharp contrast to DOGE's high-profile launch, capping a project that generated more controversy than verified taxpayer savings.
