DOGE's Mandate Ends With No Final Accounting of Its Cuts
As the Department of Government Efficiency approached the July 4, 2026 termination date set by President Trump's January 2025 executive order, OMB Director Russell Vought told a House Appropriations subcommittee on June 30 that the administration has "no plans to do kind of a closing DOGE report." The fiscal 2027 budget request does not mention DOGE. The initiative had claimed roughly $215 billion in savings — figures experts have disputed and that had not changed since January 1 — and a promised $5,000 taxpayer rebate never materialized. More than 260,000 federal employees left government under DOGE-related efforts, and some agencies, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, later had to rehire staff.
Earlier government-reform efforts, such as the Grace Commission and the National Performance Review, operated under statutory authority and produced final reports subject to oversight. Ending DOGE without a closing accounting limits Congress's and the public's ability to verify its claimed savings or assess the effects of the workforce reductions it drove.
DOGE.gov went offline earlier in the month, and the entity is set to formally sunset on July 4, 2026.
