DNC Sues Trump Administration Over $20 Million in Taxpayer-Funded Pro-Trump Ads
The Democratic National Committee sued the Trump administration on October 7, 2026, calling federally funded television ads "illegal government-sponsored propaganda" and accusing Trump of personally directing them. The ads, airing since September, were funded through a $20 million DHS contract drawn from a $175 million package Congress gave the department for immigration enforcement; AdImpact estimated the ads have cost more than $12 million to run. The suit cites a federal statute barring appropriated money from being used for "publicity or propaganda" and asks a judge to stop further use of federal funds for the campaign.
The suit follows weeks of bipartisan criticism, after watchdog groups flagged the ads in September as an improper use of public money for political messaging. Trump said on October 6 that his MAGA Inc. super PAC, not the federal government, would pay for the ads going forward, but did not commit to reimbursing funds already spent.
The case is pending in federal court; no ruling has been issued.
