Crypto Deregulation Meets Conflict of Interest: Lutnick's Dual Role Under Scrutiny

As Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick became a central figure in the Trump administration's push for lighter cryptocurrency regulation, despite deep prior financial ties to the industry through Cantor Fitzgerald, the firm he led before joining the cabinet. Cantor serves as the primary custodian for Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, and Lutnick has personally vouched for Tether's reserves in television interviews.

Senators pressed Lutnick for answers after reports surfaced that a trust benefiting his children borrowed from Tether around the same time he sold the trust his Cantor stake. The executive order creating the administration's crypto working group named the Commerce Secretary as a member tasked with proposing a digital-asset regulatory framework, without an explicit recusal given his financial history.

Lutnick agreed to divest his Cantor stake upon becoming secretary and completed that divestiture by October 2025. Critics say the arrangement illustrates officials shaping policy in sectors where they retain personal financial interests.
