Watchdog Group Sues to Force Jared Kushner to Disclose Finances as White House Envoy

The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) sued the Trump administration on Oct. 14, seeking to block Jared Kushner from continuing to serve as a special envoy without publicly disclosing his finances. The suit, which also names envoy Steve Witkoff, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in their official capacities, argues Kushner should be treated as a government employee subject to the Constitution's Appointments Clause and a post-Watergate financial-disclosure law, rather than as the unpaid private citizen the administration calls him.

CREW says it has been directly harmed because Kushner's undisclosed holdings, including ties to foreign investors, are shielded from scrutiny that applies to Senate-confirmed officials.

Kushner's attorney called the suit "without merit" and said CREW lacks standing; White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly dismissed the group as "unserious." The suit is pending in federal court, and no hearing date has been set.
