Capital One Tells a Court It Closed 385 Trump Organization Accounts Over Money-Laundering Concerns
Capital One told a federal court that it closed hundreds of Trump Organization and affiliated accounts in 2021 because of anti-money-laundering concerns, according to filings reported on Aug. 3, 2026. The bank's motion states that the closures were the result of months of analysis and a careful review by Capital One's anti-money-laundering team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance. About 385 accounts tied to the Trump Organization, Executive Vice President Eric Trump and affiliated businesses were closed. Capital One asked the judge to dismiss Trump's suit, which alleges he and other conservatives were debanked over their political views.
The filing places a specific compliance rationale on the public record in a case the president has used to advance a broader debanking claim, while his administration sets bank regulatory policy.
These are the bank's litigation assertions, not findings by a court or a regulator. In March, U.S. District Judge Roy Altman dismissed an earlier version of the suit and allowed a limited window to refile; Capital One says the amended complaint has the same flaws. Trump has filed a similar suit against JPMorgan Chase seeking $5 billion.
