"Bitcoin Jesus" Roger Ver Settles Federal Tax Case for Nearly $50 Million

Crypto investor Roger Ver, known as "Bitcoin Jesus," reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the Justice Department in October 2025, agreeing to pay roughly $49.9 million to resolve charges of tax evasion, mail fraud, and filing false tax returns tied to concealing Bitcoin holdings after renouncing his U.S. citizenship in 2014. Under the deal, prosecutors will drop the charges if Ver meets the agreement's terms rather than pursuing a trial.

Ver had faced allegations that he failed to pay an exit tax owed on his cryptocurrency holdings and later concealed the 2017 sale of tens of thousands of bitcoins worth about $240 million. The settlement avoids prison time and a public trial, a resolution that legal observers say fits a broader pattern of high-profile crypto figures securing negotiated outcomes rather than courtroom prosecutions.

The deal was reached as the Trump administration has generally eased federal enforcement posture toward cryptocurrency figures and businesses. Supporters describe such settlements as an efficient and pragmatic way to recover revenue; critics say the outcome reflects a justice system in which wealth and political climate can soften enforcement against well-connected defendants.
