Autopsy Says National Guard Troops on Trump's Memphis Task Force Shot Tyrin Johnson, 20, in the Back

An autopsy released by Tyrin Johnson's family on Aug. 27 says a single bullet entered the right side of the 20-year-old's back and exited his upper right chest on a slightly upward path. Tennessee National Guard members on the Memphis Safe Task Force shot him in the early hours after July 4. Authorities had said he turned toward them with a handgun and was hit in the chest. A forensic pathologist who reviewed it for the Associated Press said the trajectory fits Johnson running away, and that the lack of soot or stippling indicates a shot from beyond three feet.

The task force, created after Trump sent troops to cities he called overrun with crime, had four fatal shootings between May and July. It bears on whether accounts from personnel on a federal mission can be checked.

The manner of death is listed as homicide, a classification with no legal weight. No charges have been filed, the state investigation is open, and the family says it has seen no video.
